Advanced Encryption Standard. One of a number of standards for securing data during transmission by encrypting it.  

ANSI

American National Standards Institute. The national standards body for the United States. ANSI, through its accredited standards, keeps the standards for all applications of technology and mechanics for the U.S.

Acronym for American National Standards Institute, which is the organization that acts as coordinator and clearing house for information on national standards, including EDI.

ANSI ASC X12

ANSI Accredited Standards Committee X12. The committee was chartered by ANSI in 1979 to develop uniform standards for the electronic interchange of business documents. The group was authorized by the American National Standards Institute to develop and maintain the EDI Standards used in the United States.

 

2nd Definition:

Also referred to simply as ANSI X12 or the X12 format, ANSI ASC X12 is the most common EDI standard used in North America.

API

Acronym for Application Program Interface, which is middleware provided by a software publisher that enables software created by other software publishers to integrate with their application.

Application

In most cases, a computer program. For example, a spreadsheet or word processing application.

Application Acknowledgement

A transaction set whose purpose is to return a response to a transaction set that has been received and processed in an application program. For example, the Purchase Order Acknowledgment transaction is used to respond to the Purchase Order transaction with content such as whether the receiver can fulfill the order and if it can be done on time.

Application Advice

A transaction set that accepts, rejects or identifies errors in the content of any transaction set beyond normal syntax checks.

Archive

To remove a file from your workstation and store it on a floppy disk, tape drive or hard disk. Archiving secures your files and saves space on your workstation.

AS1

AS1 (Applicability Statement 1) is a specification for transporting data securely and reliably over the Internet using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) as the communications protocol. SMTP is the de facto standard for exchanging e-mail transmissions across the Internet. Security is achieved by using digital certificates and encryption.

AS2

AS2 (Applicability Statement 2) is a specification for transporting data securely and reliably over the Internet using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) as the communications protocol. Security is achieved by using digital certificates and encryption.

AS3

AS3 (Applicability Statement 3) is a specification for transporting data securely and reliably over the Inernet using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) as the communications protocol. Security is achieved by using digital certificates and encryption.

ASC

Acronym for Accredited Standards Committee, which is a team that has been chartered by ANSI to develop a specific set of standards.

ASN

An Advanced Ship Notice, or ASN, is also known as the 856 transaction in EDI parlance. ASNs indicate when a shipment was sent, the carrier used to ship it, and how it was packed.

Associations

An association is a collection of companies who share common business practices. Association members, or subscribers, trade the same set of documents when trading with each other.

When you become a member of an Association, you

§         Have access to all EDI forms used by association members.

§         Are eligible for any special pricing provided by the association.

§         Can openly trade with other association member companies.

Authentication

A mechanism that allows the receiver of an electronic transmission to verify the sender and the integrity of the content of the transmission through the use of an electronic "key" or algorithm shared by the trading partners. The algorithm is sometimes referred to as an electronic or digital signature.

BAI

A Financial Services Group responsible for defining the Cash Management Balance Reporting Specifications. BAI1 and subsequently BAI2 were defined as the basis for agreement between a bank and its corporate customer on how data from the bank’s account processing software would be communicated to the customer’s account processing software.

Bar Code

An array of' rectangular marks and spaces in a predetermined pattern. Usually used for automatic product or shipment identification.

Barcode

A barcode (also bar code) is a machine-readable representation of information. Originally barcodes stored data in the widths and spacings of printed parallel lines, but today they also come in patterns of dots, concentric circles, and text codes hidden within images. Barcodes can be read by optical scanners called barcode readers.

Batch Control Totals

Ensures that batch processing has been performed correctly by comparing output to currency or quantity totals, record or document counts, or hash totals.

Batch Processing

The processing of computer information after it has accumulated in one group or batch.

Baud

The rate at which the signal changes when data is transmitted. It is often the same as the number of bits per second.

Bill of Landing

A document that is used by a vendor and a freight carrier that describes the freight classification of the goods being shipped by the vendor.

Billing Period

In GXS TradeWeb, all charges are tracked and posted on the 20th of each month. The Billing Period includes all charges incurred from the 21st of one month to the 20th of the next month.

Binary

A system of numerical notation in which only the values of 0 and 1 are used.

Bisynchronous

A communication protocol whereby messages are sent as blocks of characters. The blocks of data are checked for completeness and accuracy by the receiving computer.

BOM

Bill of materials (BOM) is the term used to describe the "parts list" of components needed to complete an end-item for sale.

BSP

A Business System Plug-in (BSP) is a TrueCommerce software module that "maps" or arranges the data structure of EDI transactions so that they may be imported into and exported out of an accounting software application in an automated fashion.

Business Document

A set of information components that are interchanged as part of a business activity.

Business Process

A set of related activities that, when correctly performed, will satisfy an explicit business goal.
